Dear Doug,
It was a privilege to learn about how to do science from you. At a very basic level, you helped me see that a simple approach, along with endless persistence, would yield an interesting result. The real lesson here was that this pattern was fully generalizable.
Thank you for every countless hour you spent with me, drawing on white boards, giving data examples off the top of your head, and generally keeping my attention (more or less) on the task at hand. Every weekly check in left me more energized to keep working, and that's in large part to the positive and joyful energy you brought.
There are so many more things I could thank you for, but I'll just leave you with a thank you for drawing me to UBC and British Columbia. It's been a wild ride.
Congratulations on a well earned retirement. I hope it is filled with endless ski runs and bike trails.
P.S. Sorry about that time I worried you about being in jail in Ottawa. It was a great conference though!
