Félicitations Papa! You finally made it to a life of leisure!
Some of my favorite childhood memories are tied to linguistics—parties filled with laughter (and food, always food!), sharing moin moin, Sri Lankan treats with Edna and Carmen, and the countless meals that seemed to come with every academic gathering. Later, at UBC, your office became my personal bike-gear storage while I was in class, and I always felt welcome in the department, surrounded by such kind and brilliant people.
Your retirement is so well deserved. I’ve watched you work tirelessly—helping grad students, answering emails late into the night, tackling admin work, and, most of all, bringing passion to teaching. You’ve truly made an impact, and I hope you take this next chapter to relax (and maybe still enjoy some great food along the way!), and get to walk across Asia! 😉
