I first met Doug in 2007 at UBC, when he was my professor for an undergraduate phonology course that I took as a recently-graduated unclassified student. I had discovered linguistics during the last couple of years of undergrad, and was beginning to have an inkling that this might be something I would like to do more of. Anyway, I left Doug’s class even more enamoured with the field than before, went off into the world and spent several years in a whole other career, but could never quite shake the linguistics thing. Eventually I decided to apply to graduate school and was thrilled to be offered a spot back here at UBC. I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to continue to learn from this truly wonderful phonologist and teacher over the last several years. Thanks for getting me hooked on phonology, Doug, and for all the questions and discussion and (especially!) vowel harmony that came thereafter.
Wishing you all of the best *everything* that you might hope for in your retirement– it’s all very well deserved. Congratulations!
