Dear Prof. Pulleyblank,
It was through your support that I gained admission to conduct part of my doctoral research at the University of British Columbia (UBC) while studying at the University of Hong Kong. When I arrived in Vancouver to commence my studies, I had only dreamed of a 'book-long' study period filled with official meetings and email exchanges, but you gave me so much more. You went beyond the traditional role of an academic supervisor, welcoming me into your beautiful home and, together with Anne-Marie, providing me with every care and support I needed. Whether it was accommodation, clothing, making coffee, sightseeing, snowboarding, skiing, biking, running, or engaging me in lighthearted conversations about Nigeria and Ghana to bring me laughter and relief, you ensured that I lacked nothing! The times spent with you and Anne-Marie in Whistler and later with you, Alex, and Samuel have left me with profound memories to this day. Throughout my study period at UBC, you alleviated the potential stress my research could have caused.
Your unflinching interest in my academic growth and personal development is extraordinary. Perhaps it’s no coincidence that I was awarded my PhD degree in the same year as your retirement. It now feels as though I was the last of many blessed students you guided in a boat to cross the river to a brighter side of life. At the same time, I realise that you taught me invaluable life lessons within a short time frame – lessons far more precious than a university degree. You embody kindness and compassion for humanity, and I strive to carry that forward in my own life.
I wish you a retirement filled with joy and the pursuit of your passions.
Ẹ̀ ṣé, Bàbá Doug!
