Doug, I wish you all the best for your retirement! I’ve admired your work and your approach to phonology since I was a graduate student. Although we would see each other at conferences, the African Linguistics School was where I got to spend the most time with you: sharing meals and outings, debating phonology, and nightly walks to the local maquis in Yamoussoukro! I also had the privilege of seeing you in action in the classroom at ALS, skillfully leading a class through the intricacies of an analysis, step by logical step. Now, your former students will be teaching the next generation of phonologists. I know you’ll enjoy spending more time with Anne-Marie and the rest of your family now, and you won’t be short of things to do – there are still many mountains to climb!
