Doug, you were a great teacher and supervisor. You inspired confidence and love for the subject. Although I do remember receiving the draft of a chapter back, with, among other comments, "Justify" written boldly in the margin. I went away, did more research, added several citations, fleshed out my arguments and returned the chapter to you, only to have you return it with the same comment. It took me a while to figure out that you just wanted me to fix the ragged right margin. You may have overestimated my level of understanding.
I also remember your wonderful family. One moment that stands out was the time that you left 5-year-old Vic with me, in my shared student office, because you had to teach and Anne Marie had an exam. When I gave Vic my Human Brain Coloring book to keep him busy, he paged through the pages I had coloured in, and then asked me if I had done the colouring. He then informed me that you had a book at home that showed the brain to be sort of yellowish, all over, not brightly coloured, as I had done. "You mean I did it all wrong?" I gasped. He patted my hand gently and assured me that, in spite of my mistake, I had made it very beautiful.
