Laurie Fais (for herself and for Eric Vatikiotis-Bateson)

Congratulations on retirement–may it open up your life for whatever feeds your soul. I owe you great thanks for all you did to help (daughter) Indiana and me when we arrived at UBC from Japan as the vanguard for the family in the summer of 2002. You fed us, let us crash for a day or so as we got our feet under us, and even loaned us sweatshirts as we transitioned from the regular 35 degree temperatures of Japan to the Vancouver "summer" temperatures of 21.
I know that Eric fully enjoyed working with you, sharing stories, and exploring ideas. And if he didn't actually compliment your work out loud (knowing him, I'd give it a 40-60 chance that he didn't), he thought it and felt it. But I often heard him give you the highest compliment he could possibly give to you as an administrator, when he heard that you had scored Stores for the Department. "He managed to get them to give him SPACE, a whole building, in a university! Now, that is a guy I want to work for!"
I know he would join me in wishing you all the very best.

Laurie, it is so nice to hear from you! E have not seen you in ages. Let’s get together. I had forgotten that you had stayed with us on your way from Japan. It brought it all back♥️

    Hope to see you soon
