I think the first time I met Doug was when I was in graduate school at UCLA in the mid-80s when Doug was teaching at USC. UCLA and USC had a combined phonology group which met periodically, sometimes in the homes of the faculty. It was great to meet someone who also worked on the phonology of African languages. I seem to remember Doug coming to speak at UT-Austin when I had a one-year position there (89-90). He was an active member of ACAL for many years and so our paths crossed often at conferences. I always make sure to attend his talks as he's a great public speaker. He was part of the group at UBC who hosted the conference on ACAL's 50th anniversary. I know he was a great mentor as well, as I was honored to be the external examiner on the PhD defense of one of his students in 2022. In summary, Doug is the complete package–great scholar, great mentor, great orator and great colleague. I wish him the very best in his well-deserved retirement.
